More details about our Bamboo Workshop Project :

Summary

This project will build and equip a bamboo products workshop with the technology needed to create sustainable livelihoods and lift 19 of east Bali’s poorest communities out of poverty on the foundations of education, healthcare, wegen, water and toilets developed since 1999. With 70,000 bamboo planted in the 19 communities since 2006 and a trained local team, this project will create a self-sustaining community owned business of high quality bamboo products for sustainable economic development.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

There are more than 3,000 impoverished families in the 19 Ban village hamlets on the arid eastern slopes of Mounts Agung and Abang in east Bali with no livelihoods opportunities due to their remoteness from cities and tourism centres. Although they now have improved facilities of education, healthcare and infrastructure, most of the youth leave the village to get labouring jobs with no future prospects. This project will affect more than 700 gezinnen in de 7 most isolated hamlets.

How will this project solve this problem?

EBPP provides facilities, resources, technology and training to our youth and communities to enable them to produce high value added bamboo products with quality control training and high regard to health and safety processes. Training in market research, product design and customer relations will also be given to the youth so that they can train others and establish community based businesses to provide sustainable livelihoods opportunities for present and future generations.

Potential Long Term Impact

The project will enable more than 100 youth from the 6 most impoverished hamlets and EBPP local team to produce high quality bamboo handicrafts for sale to domestic and foreign markets and establish sustainable livelihoods businesses to lead their families out of poverty and provide opportunities for hundreds of other youth and instead of all youth leaving the village, more can establish bamboo home industries and eliminate poverty in all 19 hamlets.
