dsc_01For some people, a disaster means the end of life on earth, because almost everything we have will be lost if disasters befall us.

According to Indonesian Law No. 24 of 2007,a disaster is defined as an event or series of events that threaten and disrupt people’s lives and livelihood caused by natural factors, non-natural factors and human factors causing human fatalities, environmental damage, loss of property, and the psychological impact

In November 2016 – precisely at the start of the rainy season – the EBPP was proud to be asked to work in partnership with the USA-based International NGO, World Relief, to carry out new activities in helping at-risk local communities understand measures they can take for disaster risk reduction. This programme is most relevant for Kubu district in Karangasem regency, as the whole geographical terrain comprises mountains, dry riverbeds and oceans, making it very vulnerable to threats of landslides, flooding and coastal erosion. To reduce the impact of disasters and to increase public knowledge about preparing for natural disasters, our joint activities will take place in five villages in Kubu district of:  Ban (EBPP’s village), Tianyar Timur, Moyen Tianyar, Tianyar Barat and Sukadana.  

Our activities started with socialization to explain the action plan through meetings with the respective village heads in their office. After the success of this initial socialization, working with the village head we directly selected four people from each village that will be trained as the village facilitators (locally called cadres).

All the 5 communities were very receptive and eager to know the activities that we have planned, so on December 16e, 17e et 18th 2016 we held a workshop attended by all the village facilitators. In the workshop, they learned specifically to understand more about the potential problems of their respective villages and the Kubu district.  

The first activity was to:

Explain what a disaster was and why they happened and then create a map of their village and explain which areas are prone to disasters; Recalling history of disasters they have suffered; Make Season Calendars with analysis of people’s livelihood; Noting daily family activities, make a Venn diagram, create tree transects and show environmental problems.

After attending the three-day workshop, all facilitators understand that they live among regional hazards.

The next activity is for all the village facilitators to conduct surveys in the field to apply what they have learned during the training. They will go around their villages to find out what was in his village and mapping of the area such as: forests, productive agricultural land, disaster-prone areas and residential areas. They must also include data on the poor, disability, mental disorder, etc. After all the data is collected we will do an analysis of which are the ideal activities we apply in the different societies.

Currently all facilitators are very enthusiastic to conduct their respective activities, in the knowledge that the purpose of these activity is to help their community to be prepared for any disaster in the future.
