We were contacted early in 2013 by Ms Aprile Collette and AA Istri Mas Wulantrisna and two of thier colleagues: Ms. Ayu & Ms.Utami. They visited EBPP’s Pengalusan school, which is located on the slopes of Mount Agung. On March 5, 2013 they saw the activity directly and plan to give training for EBPP staff and tutors in a newly designed Literacy programme at Dyatmika school. They also wanteed the kids of EBPP & Dyatmika to have closely intertwined relationships in learning together and able to share information and knowledge with each other, and started planning with EBPP team for a day that EBPP children can visit the Dyatmika school to join them in various learning activities.

In line with these plans, on May 28, 2013 twelve EBPP elementary school children (2 from each of our six different hamlet schools), six tutors (one from each school) and two EBPP staff visited Dyatmika school.

Experience is the most valuable teacher – and very appropriate to describe something that is meaningful for our visit to Dyatmika School. As we know, Dyatmika school is an international class school, that is certainly students who attend school there are students that has quality. They are very enthusiastic about our arrival and immediately want to mingle with the EBPP children. Activities followed by EBPP children are learning to string electrical components, maths games, pintura, visiting the library and playing football.

Most important was the activities undertaken by the EBPP staff and tutors. The first is a little training on how to read with the adoption of active/interactive reading. This method is very suitable to be applied to lower grades (grade 1-3) because these methods aims to create a reliable reader and foster curiosity of students. When the teacher reads a story or describes a picture, the teacher should be expected to implement the 4 questions strategy: son: 1) the strategy of open questions (questions that require an explanation); 2) strategy of closed questions (questions that require a definite answer ); 3) strategy of connection questions (questions that are related to self, other text and real life); y 4) prediction questions (questions that encourage students to think).

After our first activity was completed we had a short break for lunch. After that we moved to another activity which was guided explanations of reading strategies. This strategy emphasizes the interaction between teachers and students, students with students, and students with teachers. The purpose of this strategy is to encourage students to want to read independently.
