Mountain Villages in Black and White Ink

East Bali Poverty Project Children’s Art Exhibition and Sale at Three Monkeys Cuisine and Art Café in Ubud, opening 14 June 2009

Reproduced with permission of Bali Discovery Tours. http://www.balidiscovery.com

(5/30/2009) The stark profile of the volcanic mountains Agung and Abang dominate the work of the children of isolated Desa Ban, who have created images of "their Bali" in black & white Chinese ink. It is a Bali most viewers would attribute to the island 100 years ago. In these mountainside hamlets, where villagers eke out a subsistence living on steep slopes covered with volcanic sand during the eruption of Mt. Agung in 1963 that killed over 10,000 people, little has changed with time. Homes are still simple structures and the only water is collected from the roofs of their simple homes. East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP) has brought new hope to the regions, with appropriate technology to bring water to the villages, and new schools that are bringing light back into the life of the young ones. Click  here  to see the complete article

EAST BALI POVERTY PROJECT FIELD REPORT 30 DECEMBER 2008, by Dr. Scott Younger OBE / EBPP Commissioner

Reproduced with permission from UP.DATE Britcham Magazine, edition of January 2009 page 35 - 36,

In July 2008, the project celebrated its first ten years activities. EBPP has come a long way in that period, from the first difficult days when David Booth MBE, the founder of the projects and its leader, first started to engange the people of Desa Ban, one of the largest villages in Indonesia located in northeast Bali on the remote side of Mount Agung and Abang. Desa Ban covers over 7,000 ha of steep and undulating mountain slopes, and is home to some 15,000 people in 19 separates communities, most of which did not cross communicate prior to EBPP's "parternship" with the village. CHILDREN'S ART BEYOND ALL EXPECTATIONS: East Bali Poverty Project & Bali Dynasty Resort Organise First Children's Art Exhibition, 18 April 2007

The East Bali Poverty Project art exhibition at the Bali Dynasty Resort reveals just how well the magic ingredients of East Bali Poverty Project's education programmes do work. Starting with their first lessons in hygiene, nutrition and being on the receiving end of a good healthy meal each day, not to mention the care and devotion of a loving and supporting community deeply involved in their own children's education, these lucky children have simply blossomed. The creativity and mastery of technique that their art reveals is far beyond that of the average child of their age. Each painting affords a delightful glimpse into Balinese rural life in the isolated villages high on the slopes between Mt. Agung and Mt. Abang. ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAUNCH OF "THE ART OF LEARNING BY DOING" AT LINDA GARLAND'S ESTATE, UBUD - September 2005

Ekoturin Foundation’s East Bali Poverty Project, established in July 1998 in response to a plea for help by an isolated mountain village of over two thousand families, with no water supply, roads or electricity, has focused upon education as the force to alleviate poverty. When the foundation was first conceived, most children in this isolated area of East Bali were malnourished and illiterate, and the nearest government schools and health clinics were two to five hours mountainous walk away. Interviews in late 1998 with over 1,000 families revealed a myriad of problems, yet when asked their most urgent need, the villagers requested “education for our children so that they can lead us to a better life and a self-sufficient future”

THE LAUNCH OF "THE ART OF LEARNING BY DOING" - September 2005

On 25th September, we will be launching "The Art of Learning by Doing", an educational art story book of 7 chapters about the lives of the children in East Bali Poverty Project’s (EBPP) schools in mountainous East Bali. This book, kindly sponsored by The Annika Linden Foundation, is a true story of the children from before they started school to when they graduated, and is illustrated by 103 full colour art works by the children themselves, 78 of the works by boys and 25 by girls.  The story is in both English and Indonesian and designed as a resource book for children, parents and teachers with simple lessons on introducing health, nutrition, organic vegetable gardening and other life skills to children in practical, meaningful and enjoyable ways.
