Updating Gender Equality in Inter-School Sports Competitions

I Ketut Madya, P.E. Teacher.

Gender equality is the fundamental principle advocating for fair treatment and equal opportunities for all individuals, regardless of gender, particularly evident in domains such as sports. In the context of the inter-school sports competitions organized by EBPP, a flagship program of our extracurricular youth empowerment (EMpower) programmes, where we strive to uphold this principle by ensuring equal treatment and opportunities for both female and male students.

However, it's crucial to acknowledge that inherent differences in physical attributes such as strength, speed, and technique between genders can sometimes influence match outcomes. As referees and line judges, myself along with pak Edi and pak Suteja have observed these nuances firsthand.

For instance, in the recent futsal competition, the Pengalusan & Cegi schools’ team clinched victory, benefitting from a predominantly male team leveraging their physical advantages. Conversely, in the volleyball match, Bunga school emerged triumphant due to the superior strength of their players, whilst fielding an equal-gender team. While striving for gender equality, it is essential to recognize and address these physical disparities to ensure a level playing field for all participants.
