After attending a workshop given by Chris and Duncan, two experienced native English teacher volunteers, my perspective as an English teacher broadened significantly on the importance of student-centred cooperative learning, and I applied one of the cooperative learning methods introduced in the workshop in my lesson on simple present tense for grades 11 and 12, namely the jigsaw method.
In these classes, I divided students into small groups and give them randomly arranged pieces of a story in English. The task of each group is to organize the pieces into coherent and logical paragraphs. After all the groups have completed their tasks, we review the order of their sentences together. When applying this method, the students were much more active and showed better collaboration in completing their assignments.
The jigsaw method is not only fun but also provides significant benefits for students, such as collaborating in small groups, improving communication skills, deepening students' understanding of the material's context and grammar, and developing their critical thinking skills.
