Understanding Patriarchy Through Problem Tree Analysis: Exploring Gender Equality

Through Youth Empowerment classes, EBPP continues to create opportunities for students to understand the social and cultural factors that shape their lives. One of the important topics explored by students is patriarchy and the importance of gender equality within their communities.
Students are encouraged to look beyond definitions and examine how patriarchal practices can appear in everyday life. In communities where cultural and customary norms remain an important part of social life; expectations about the roles of girls and boys can influence family responsibilities, decision-making, education, and relationships.
To explore these issues, students worked in groups using a problem tree analysis. They began by identifying practices or issues they observe in their communities, then explored the underlying causes or “roots” of these problems. They considered how social norms, cultural expectations, and other factors can contribute to gender inequality, as well as the possible consequences for young people and their communities. Finally, they discussed possible solutions and actions that young people themselves could take.
The activity encouraged students to think critically about issues that may often be accepted as simply “that’s the way things are.” It gave them a space to ask questions, share different perspectives, and consider how change can begin within their own communities.
Students then continued their exploration through a creative activity on gender equality expressing their thoughts and understanding through posters and sketches. Their work reflected messages of respect, equality, inclusion, and the importance of understanding and respecting individual identity.
For EBPP, youth empowerment means more than providing knowledge. It is about giving young people the confidence and space to think critically, express themselves, and contribute to positive change in their communities.
Let’s challenge gender stereotypes and make space for everyone to learn, grow and contribute!
