From May 28-30, 2024, we conducted the fourth iron supplement distribution at EBPP schools in our ongoing efforts to combat anaemia among adolescent girls. This initiative targeted all 56 female students to provide them with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent anaemia and improve their overall health and well-being.
The project began with follow-up sessions to assess students' compliance with taking iron supplements provided in previous batches. We then held an educational session about anaemia, incorporating mini-games to emphasize the importance of meeting their dietary iron needs and taking their supplements consistently. Students engaged in interactive activities by selecting illustrations randomly and posting them in the correct categories, such as sources of iron, current impacts of anaemia, and future impacts of anaemia. The interactive approach helped students retain crucial information in a fun and memorable way.
Each student received 10 iron supplement tablets for taking weekly over 10 weeks. While most students reported regular intake, some admitted to missing doses due to forgetfulness. To help ensure consistency, we assisted students in setting weekly alarms on their cell phones to help them remember to take their supplements on the same day each week.
All the girls were fully engaged throughout the session, particularly enjoying the mini-games which solidified their understanding of anaemia and the importance its prevention. Several students reported noticeable health improvements from taking the supplements regularly, including better focus and concentration during studies, reduced sleepiness in class, improved overall fitness, and more radiant, healthier-looking facial skin.
These results underscore the effectiveness of continuous education and support in preventing anaemia. By equipping these young women with the knowledge and resources they need, we are fostering healthier, more academically successful futures.
