At the beginning of each semester, it is crucial for teachers to gain a clear understanding of their students’ initial abilities. This diagnostic assessment provides valuable insights that not only help measure students’ starting points and progress, but also guide teachers in designing lessons that are more targeted and effective.


Rather than relying on formal tests, I implement simple yet engaging diagnostic activities. For instance, in Vocabulary Race, students collaborate in teams to list as many English words as possible on the board. In Translation Challenge, they work together to translate sentences from Indonesian into English using the correct tenses.


These activities serve a dual purpose: they allow me to observe students’ skills in a natural and enjoyable way, while also creating a positive and fun classroom atmosphere where students feel encouraged to participate actively without the pressure of grades. Ultimately, this approach not only supports student growth but also fosters a more meaningful and effective learning experience.
