Bamboo is one of nature’s most versatile grasses. Other than being used for building materials, handicrafts, and furniture, it also plays an important role in Balinese art as the material for beautiful traditional musical instruments. After learning various bamboo craft skills and making quality products such as the balancing dragonfly, stationery holders, chairs, etc, EBPP students are now exploring a new form of creativity — making a simple yet unique traditional instrument called the cungklik.
The cungklik is a traditional Balinese musical instrument often played by both children and adults. Making it requires patience and precision, as each piece of bamboo must be cut into different sizes and shaped to produce distinct tones. The more accurate the measurements and placement, the more harmonious the sound that emerges.
Whether played solo or in a group, the cungklik creates a joyful and melodious harmony that connects people through music. Through this activity, EBPP students not only gain new creative skills but also help preserve Bali’s rich cultural heritage — keeping the island’s beautiful traditions alive for generations to come.
