My First Experience as a Girl Joining Volleyball Competition

By: Susanti, Grade 9, Bunga School

Tuesday, August 8th, 2023 was a remarkable day for me and my friends when our school took the first place in the volleyball competition. This competition was part of EMpowher Gender Equality-Sports Competitions where it was the first time for the EBPP students or youth in Ban Village to join a competition that involved girls as team members. There were two sports competitions, volleyball and futsal, and to support girls’ inclusion in sports, each team must consist of a minimum of 2 girls.

This is my first time joining a sports competition and, as a girl, I was afraid and so nervous when the teachers announced it. Luckily, although no girls joined any sport competition before, the boys were very supportive of us. They taught us how to play properly like how to do passing, serving, libero, placement, and move.

It was a tough competition for us since the teams from other EBPP schools were quite good and we struggled to get the scores - especially us girls - but luckily, my team came out as the winner!
