The spirits of freedom and unity filled the air as the students, teachers, and staff of the East Bali Poverty Project (EBPP), and the local village police officer gathered at EBPP Daya School to celebrate the 81st Independence Day of Indonesia! The memorable day began with icebreaker games followed by a nutritious breakfast of boiled sweet potatoes and boiled eggs, perfectly fuelling everyone for a solemn flag-raising ceremony to honour the nation's heroes.

One of the flag-raising troop, Parwati (Manikaji School Grade 12 student) stated afterwards "Being chosen as a flag bearer was such a huge honour, but I was so anxious about not making mistakes during the ceremony," Devi shared. "When the flag unfolded smoothly and reached the top, a wave of pride washed over me. Getting to jump straight into the fun games and celebrate with everyone right after made the day complete!"

Once the official ceremony concluded, the school grounds were buzzing, as the fun competitions got underway, where participants showcased impressive teamwork, balance, and creativity in various hilarious traditional games, including: the Helmet Sack Race, Left-Handed Nail Hammering, Tug-of-War, Cracker Eating Pairs, Blindfolded Partner Search, and Maja Fruit Painting

The stage and grounds then came alive with laughter, traditional games, Balinese dances, poetry, and a unique traditional-meets-modern music performance of ‘The Final Countdown’. Keeping the energy high was Parwati’s Manikaji classmate, Wilasmi, who took the mic as MC for the very first time. "I felt so incredibly nervous before stepping on stage," she admitted. "But seeing everyone’s smiles and feeling the warm support from our teachers, all those nerves turned into pure pride and excitement!"

Huge congratulations to Pengalusan School for taking 1st Place Overall in the competitions, with Darmaji School and Bunga School taking 2nd and 3rd Place! The day wrapped up with a thrilling Betel Nut Climbing challenge, a modern dance session, and everyone joining hands to clean up the venue. A heartfelt thank you to our generous donors, guests, teachers, and students for making this celebration an unforgettable success!
