One of the teacher’s roles is not only to teach writing skills but also to help students express their ideas confidently. To support them with this, I introduced a simple and fun activity, initially to my Grade 9 students: learning speech texts.

In this lesson, students were divided into groups and given topics to discuss, such as: “Why is maintaining cleanliness important in school?” Each group talked about the issue, identified the main message, and drafted a short speech based on their ideas.

Through this activity, students became more active in organizing their thoughts and understanding how a speech should be structured and eventually - presented. Even those who are usually quiet were able to follow the discussion and learn how to build clear arguments.

The session concluded with students delivering the speeches they had drafted, and although they were not yet ready to present it without looking at their notes, this stage clearly showed their learning process. Many were still practicing and familiarizing themselves with the ideas they had written, indicating that they are gradually building the confidence  needed for proper speech delivery. This early progress highlights that they are still in the rehearsal phase, learning how to articulate their points clearly, manage their nerves, and prepare for real public speaking. With continued guidance and more structured practice, students should soon progress from simply reading their text to presenting it with confidence, clarity, and independence.

This activity helps students become more independent in expressing their opinions and shows them that speech skills are useful not only in school but also in everyday life.
