Bamboo: The Versatile Grass Turning Creativity into Opportunities

Throughout Ban Village, bamboo grows abundantly and is one of the communities’ most valuable local resources. It is used for construction, household items, Hindu ceremonies, musical instruments and many types of handicrafts. With creativity and proper skills, bamboo is a sustainable resource with significant economic potential.

Recognising this opportunity, EBPP students are learning to transform bamboo into useful and valuable products. They have previously made balancing bamboo dragonflies, wall clocks, stationery holders, and simple furniture. The programme is now expanding with new skills and products.

Junior high school students who had never worked with bamboo before are learning to make balancing bamboo dragonflies, developing their patience, creativity, and attention to detail. Senior high school students are learning to make the traditional Balinese musical instrument, “cungklik”, from bamboo. Through this activity, they learn not only practical skills but also teamwork, cooperation, and responsibility as they work together to create and play music.

This programme shows young people how local natural resources can be transformed into useful, artistic, and marketable products. In the future, these skills could provide additional income for families while encouraging young people to plant, protect, and sustainably use bamboo as an important resource for the sustainable economic future of all the unique Ban Village mountain communities.
